ANTIOXIDANTS |
What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants have many positive qualities when it comes to detoxify the human body. For example, these substances shield our DNA and our tissues from free radicals first. In addition, they contribute to a responsible balance of our acid-base household and they have healthy detoxifying effects. They stimulate cell metabolism and metabolism. They also support the body in retaining the right amount of oxygen. Finally, antioxidants are also indispensable for the absorption of nutrients.
Which nutrients?
The name antioxidants stands for a broad group of substances. This includes vitamin C and vitamin E. Various pigments, so-called trace elements such as zinc, manganese, selenium and sulphur, also fall under this heading. Research has shown several of these substances to play an important role in rendering free radicals harmless in human cells. This applies, among other things, to the aforementioned vitamins E and C. Also beta-carotene (vitamin A / pigment) and selenium have a proven antioxidant effect. In other words: the detoxifying effect of these substances has been demonstrated.
Free radicals?
The formation of free radicals occurs in a healthy metabolism, but can also be stimulated by (the effects of) some diseases. Inflammatory reactions are an example of this. Sunbathing and smoking can also contribute to this. The damage these aggressive substances can cause in tissue and cell material is called 'oxidative stress'.
This stress occurs when these aggressive substances are present at locations in the body where this is not desired or with an excess of it.
Special pigments
The supplements from the PlanktonHolland range also contain a broad spectrum of so-called bioactive 'hydroxy carotenoids'. The scientific research that is currently being carried out into the detoxifying effect of these very old pigments seems to indicate positive effects for the time being. The following substances belong to the name xanthophylls (hydroxy carotenoids): antheraxanthin, astaxanthin, beta-carotene, canthaxanthin, chlorophyll, vaucheriaxanthin, violaxanthin and zeaxanthin.
