WONDERFUL PLANKTON

Plankton is the collective name for all alive free floating in the water. The Wonderful Plankton (Marine Phytoplankton) is the vegetable part of this and provide at least 50% of all oxygen on earth. Without these plants there is no life on earth! Moreover, they are at the base of the food pyramid in the sea, through which ultimately predatory fish, marine mammals, seabirds and fish-eating people get their essential nutrients. There are Marine Plankton microfossils en discovered in Australia , South Africa and Swaziland 3.4 billion years old.

PLANKTON DETERMINES THE DIRECTION OF THE HURRICANE

The powerful, ruthless and deadly storms on our planet are on the leash to ……… the smallest sea creatures. Research shows this. The Marine Phytoplankton determines whether groups of tropical storms become hurricanes and also has a considerable finger in the pie when it comes to the route taken by the storms. Marine Phytoplankton is everywhere. The large quantity has a huge impact on this earth and its waters in particular. With their photosynthetic they are the cause that the originally blue sea becomes green. This green water captures light and solar heath on shallower spots, causing the increase of the temperature of the water and hurricanes have every opportunity to form.

THEY HAVE AMAZING SHAPES

Most of the immemorial Wonderful Plankton plants are only visible with a microscope. They often have amazing shapes, from round to oblong and sometimes with beautiful protrusions. In the cells you can see the green and brown of the chloroplasts.

OIL DROPLETS IN THEIR HOUSES

The Marine Phytoplankton plant are not without reason small and light. The smaller you are, the larger is the surface area in relation to its weight. The larger your surface area is in proportion, the slower you sink. In Marine Phytoplankton plants of the diatoms kind buoyancy is increased by all kinds of protrusions in the form of hairs and prickles. Some species have a fatty acid (oil)drop in their little house to increase their floating ability. Further the intricate patterns of grooves, indentations and perforations on the houses also serve to increase the surface area and therefore the buoyancy.

A GREAT VARIETY

Enormous varieties of plants and animals live in the oceans. All this marine life cannot live without carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Animals cannot produce these nutrients, plants however can. All animals in the sea are dependent on the Marine Phytoplankton fort their commodities. They directly or indirectly get their nutrients by feeding on Marine Phytoplankton or Plankton eaters. Zooplankton feed on the Marine Phytoplankton. Benthic animals and fish in their turn Zooplankton and indirectly obtain their nutrients this way, while they in their turn are eaten by larger fish, seabirds and marine mammals.

HUNTING WITH THE BLUE WHALE

The enormous body of the blue whale requires a lot of energy and so the whale must be creative to make the most of his meal. Researchers have found that the blue whale is a real acrobat. But why? What is the purpose of those acrobatics? In order to find out the research equipped the blue whale with a camera. This way they found out that the acrobatics are particularly effective.

The blue whale turns 180 degrees. This way he swallows so to speak the plankton from below. By the rotating movements the blue whale already anticipates on the fact that the Wonderful Algae. It is a costly exercise for the whale. The 180 degrees movement takes energy. But ultimately it is probably all this effort worth, so researches write in the journal Biology Letters. “Since some groups of plankton have a high density, a blue whale can catch his daily necessary quantity of energy with only one dive.
